Retaining a positive body image in a society which is clearly obsessed with how we look and how much we weigh can be quite difficult but if we are going to find and keep that elusive positive body image, then we should not pay heed to any negative communications regarding how we look. There is no doubt that there is a constant bombardment of negative impressions from the media alone, so it is important that we boost our self-esteem to keep ourselves resilient and strong and this way, that positive body image and inner confidence can be ours.

To find that positive body image, we need to look within so that we can establish what is important to us in the long-term because 'losing weight' will not guarantee us happiness in the future, it might simply be a symptom of why we have such self-doubts about our own body shape.

The following tips may help when identifying the key elements to a positive body image:

· Sadly, many of us judge individual parts of our bodies instead of focussing on our bodies as a whole. Perhaps we long for a slimmer and more defined waist and fail to see our shapely legs. Always try to see the positive instead.

· Don't set complete faith in jumping on the scales to see how many pounds have been lost. It's not all about losing weight; it's about shaping up and feeling fit and healthy. A sensible weight loss is fine, but settle at the weight that feels comfortable for you. Don't overdo it.

· Remember that your weight will vary and you might never regain the weight you were as a teenager. Don't focus on the negative, focus on feeling good about yourself now.

· If watching programs that highlight stick thin women is upsetting, then don't watch. Focus instead on finding a dress style that epitomises the beautiful person within.

· If you have a curvy shape, revel in it. Don't suppress your natural curves.

· If you spend hours checking the mirror and worrying about your shape, then make a pact with yourself to stop right now. Focus instead on using some visualisation techniques as these will really boost your internal positive body image.

There is nothing as beautiful as a confident person. If you're not convinced, think about those people around you who are incredibly charismatic and attractive, although may not be beautiful in a media painted sense, perhaps they shine because of their natural confidence, sense of humour and love of life. If we can touch and boost our inner spirit, promote all that is good about us as individuals and make the most of our natural qualities, then we will be able to find that positive body image and best of all, keep it for good.
